Adherents of the Westboro Baptist Church are among the most interesting people in America. They are the only group that makes members of the Tea Party come across as logical and loving folk. Church members led by Fred Phelps have roamed the United States for years appearing at funerals of those who died in the Afghanistan or Iraq war with banners proclaiming their special brand of hate and anger. “God Hates Fags” or “Thank God For Dead Soldiers” are among the more pleasant of their banners of hate. They hate any and all aspects of modern life, but are not articulate as to the world they desire. Counter Demonstrators turned out yesterday and held aloft a banner that read: “Sorry For Your Loss.” Naturally, to Westboro folk, those are fighting words of anger toward them.
A spokesperson, Steve Drain, made clear their response to a statement of compassion: “I just don’t even know what they mean by what they’re saying.” The initial words of intelligence from this group.
