We know that 24 Pakistan soldiers were killed by American artillery, but we simply don’t know why they were killed. Pakistan’s armed forces insist their 24 troops were killed by “an act of deliberate aggression” and insists American troops were told about the presence of a Pakistan unit. It becomes confusing when the Pakistan military admits failure to have their own airforce swing into battle stemmed from “a breakdown of communication” and “confusion at various levels.”
The US military insists they checked with the Pakistan army and were told there was no Pakistan unit in the area. The unanswered question is how American planes entered Pakistan space, but no Pakistan planes rose to investigate their presence. If past history is any guide, it is most probable that somehow Pakistan officers were once again sound asleep or they provided incorrect information to NATO/US forces.
