Why the Universe?

As our space program prepares to drop a robot on Mars in order to search for life, it occurs to me there are more fundamental questions to seek. Why does the universe exist? I write words, I think thoughts, and  I wonder if the fact of our existence on this planet was ordained or was it a mistake in some laboratory experiment? I often wonder if who I am is simply a toy being manipulated by some powerful intelligent life form who is interested in how life forms evolve.

Of course, the most probable reason for why we have a universe is so that I can pose the question: why do we have a universe? There must be a reason. What is must have evolved from what is, how else can something emerge from nothing? Anyway, I trust our robot discovers something on Mars that helps answer the question as to why is there a universe?
