It is a long, long time from May to December, but the days grow shorter when you reach October. The days dwindle down to a precious few as December arrives and America has to decide whether to remain in the rugged land of Afghanistan. President Obama has made clear that no American men and women will be allowed to reside in Afghanistan unless they are under the jurisdiction of American Military courts and not a single one can be tried in an Afghan court room. President Hamid Karzai has called together a loya jirga, committee of the elders in order to examine the American proposal for special military courts. Most probably this group will not accept such procedures -as did the Iraqi government. Americans no longer reside in Iraq and there is a strong possibility the same will occur in Afghanistan.
The good news is this provides an early opportunity for Afghan forces to handle their own defense. The bad news is this provides an early opportunity for Afghan forces to handle their own defense. I doubt if President Karzai understands that no American president can allow Afghan law to apply to American forces. Oh, well, December will shortly be upon us.
