After ten years of discussing the situation in this nation one can only conclude there will never be a conclusion. Jan Kubis, the UN representative in Afghanistan has been meeting with members of the Taliban concerning an end to war, and is optimistic because: “the Parliament is discussing it, civil society is discussing it at all levels, not only at the top level, but at every level.” OK, so we now know there are “discussions.” We know a lot of people are “talking” to one another. I assume this is the good news.
Of course, the bad news is those who talk with others walk away angry because they do not agree with others. Actually, what is needed is a conversation in which one of the parties says, “that is an interesting idea, I think I can accept it.”
