Thailand is a nation which has been politically and socially divided for many years. Under the regime of former prime minster, Thaksin Shinawatra, the “red shirt”supporters of the rather rich man, demanded an end to military influence in government. His sister, YIngluck Shinawatra is now head of the nation and is pushing through a reconciliation bill that exonerates those convicted by prior governments. Parliament broke out in fights as “yellow shirt” haters of Thaksin refused to allow the bill to be passed. There were fights on the floor of Parliament.
Yesterday, thousands of “yellow shirts” took to the streets expressing disapproval of any reconciliation law. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra failed to grasp how reconciliation can be implemented. She should have involved opposition members to help draft the law. Reconciliation only works if ALL participants in the conflict buy into the process.
We fear the military will eventually decide the future of Thailand.
