As a Jewish boy raised in a nice conservative Jewish family during the Depression, we were not very thrilled by bearded men who mooched money off our hard working fathers and mothers because God ordained they should study the Torah and not soil their hands with work. Israel has the Tal Law which exempts from military service boys in the Yeshiva who need the time to study the Torah. The Israel High Court of Justice ruled unconstitutional this law.
I believe strongly that men AND women should study the Torah. However, I also believe engaged in daily work enables one to study the Torah from a different perspective than remaining in a Yeshiva and never engaged with the outside world. If the Torah is a living document, it should be studied by those involved in living.
