Zimbabwe has been run by the ruthless regime of Robert Mugabe which regards the very idea of an opposing voice as tantamount to treason. However, since Mugabe agreed to a power sharing agreement with Morgan Tsvangirai he is under pressure to at least pretend to have an interest in freedom. Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa announced the rules against restricting the right of the media to express their views will be relaxed in order to allow some opposing voices. He also said there would be an effort to treat those in prison with the basic rights of a human being such as being provided food, shelter and clothes.
It is always difficult to believe any statement by Mugabe which pertains to freedom, particularly freedom of the press or speech. The people of Zimbabwe will wait and see.
